won’t you be my neighbor?

this essay that i’m writing about Mr. Rogers is the most emotionally fulfilling academic assignment I have ever done. when I finish it, I hope to be a better neighbor. thank you, Mr. Rogers. your influence spans generations, and it jumped 15 years to reach me again at age 20. thank you.

shoe shopping

Some day, when I have kids, I’ll find my teenage son on the computer online shoe shopping instead of studying for his organic chemistry midterm.

“Son, I’ve been where you are now. You’ll regret it in a couple of days if you continue doing what you’re doing right now.”

I’m going to be the kind of hypocritical “learn-from-my-mistakes” dad who lectures a lot.

“You only live once.”

I cut a man off while riding my scooter on my way to church today. Instead of giving me the finger or shooting me a dirty look, he rolled down his window at a red light and said to me, “you only live once.” I apologized for cutting him off and he explained that he also rode a bike and knew how dangerous it could be. Then he said it again, “you only live once.” I thanked him for his wisdom and spent the rest of the morning thinking about his words.

I think the man just wanted me to ride more cautiously, but what really struck me were the deeper implications of his message whether they were intended or not. You only live once. There are no restarts, no respawns, no round twos. You could die tomorrow and that would be the end of your life here on this planet.  You only live once. That means there are X amount of years, X amount of months, X amount of days until your life is over. What will you do with that precious time? You could live it to the fullest and at the end of your life say, “I lived my life to my highest potential and I have no regrets.” Or you could squander it away and at the end of it all kick yourself for all the missed opportunities and time wasted. My hope is that you choose to be significant and choose the former.

Life changing moments are few and far between and this was one of them. Thank you, Stranger.
